Cabuya Costa Rica
Tip of the Nicoya Peninsula

Cabuya Costa Rica, a small fishing village - located right near the very tip of the Nicoya Peninsula...

Is home to the country's first-ever protected area - the Cabo Blanco Absolute Reserve... founded in 1963, largely due to the efforts of Nicolas Wessburg and Karen Mogensen.

...

Accessed from either Montezuma - just a 20 minute drive or bus ride south, or Malpais - another small fishing town, located opposite side of the peninsula...

Cabuya is a great little spot, for a day trip. Recommendation...

Cabuya Costa Rica
Malpais to Cabuya, by ATV

Rent an ATV (but please drive slow, and definitely not on the beaches) for the afternoon. Along the coastline, and even in the jungle en route - there'll be chances to spot wildlife, animals like monkeys, birds, and others.

Driving from Montezuma - just after Rio Lajas (Lajas River) - there's this incredibly amazing tree to the side of the road, a Banyan... home to a colony of bats.

Be sure to take a look!

Great Eats in Cabuya Costa Rica

During your visit to Cabuya, I recommend making a stop at the Panderia - a beautiful little restaurant/bakery, owned by a really nice family in the area.

Serving up dishes like pasta, sandwiches, sushi, and other delicious eats...

Always Incredible Food, at Panderia Cabuya

...it's easily one of the best secret spots on the entire peninsula.

Oh, and be sure to try their fruit smoothies, and cold coffee drinks. The portions are HUGE, always impressive.

Another stop along the way...

Is Lela's Delfine de La Luna (Dolphin of the Moon).

Home-style Costa Rican cooking...

This quaint little soda - located directly across from the bar, just by the intersection where you'd turn off to Malpais...

Has some of the most delicious casados and gallo pinto - anywhere.

Explore the Cabuya Area

Almost 50 years ago, the Cabo Blanco Absolute Reserve was founded - thanks to the efforts of two very special people...

Nicolas and Karen

Nicolas Wessburg and Karen Mogensen.

1250 hectares, it covers the entire tip of southern-most part of the Nicoya Peninsula...

...and even extends - 1 km from the coastline - out into the Pacific Ocean.

Incredibly, this reserve - first of its kind here in Costa Rica... comprises 85% secondary forest, trees that have regenerated over the years due to reforestation efforts.

So important, here on the Rich Coast - there's an entire page dedicated to Cabo Blanco, here on the site.
